Caption: Doug Rice and others involved with ARTWalk worked with traffic engineers on plans improvements for University Avenue. Normally that means widening the street and encouraging increased traffic flow, but in this case a traffic artery between the suburbs and downtown Rochester was narrowed from four lanes to three. Median strips and bumpouts at intersections were installed, along with other traffic calming features. That design provided the opportunity for ARTWalk, still in its infancy, to flower.
